There's Hope For Today

DAY 140 OF 366

Short-term missions have changed my life. From Southeast Asia, to the rocky shores of Panama, to the depths of Siberia, I’ve touched fields my grandfather thought untouchable. I’ve climbed empty pedestals to stand where Lenin’s great monoliths looked blindly upon a crumbling empire.

The statues are gone, but the darkness remains. My world-view has been sharpened with each short-term encounter so that I now consider myself a “world Christian” – one who sees all of the world as a single great harvest field.

Western perspectives have been stiffly challenged by needs that can’t be met with an American program or offering. A child’s smile and hug has undermined my cultural prejudices. I can no longer despise a people because of their political ideologies or religious persuasions. I have lost my sense of “us” and “them.” Politics dissolve in the tears of a hungry child. Racial barriers are swept away in the cleansing flood of redemption. Cultural distinctions flow into a common pool of need. For all that is being done, the need just keeps growing. Help us!

Begin to pray daily for a nation; a people; a city. Go, or make it possible for someone else to carry God’s light. There’s not much time.
