Ephesians: How to Love Like Jesus

DAY 12 OF 17

Devotional:

When you were a kid growing up, did you ever get in trouble? Maybe you were given a time-out, or perhaps you were grounded for a week. Our parents disciplined us so that we would learn rules and strive to live in a better way. But if they never told us what we were doing wrong, how would we know to change our ways?

In this passage, Paul tells the Ephesians everything they must avoid if they want to walk in the way of love. He makes it clear that the actions listed in this passage are not for God’s people. While this passage can feel harsh and overwhelming, it is also a wonderful reminder of how good our God is because He accepted us while we were living in darkness.

Questions:

  1. What is an area of your life that used to dwell in the darkness but is now in the light? How did you bring it into the light? Where did you see God working in you?
  2. What is an area of your life that still dwells in the darkness? How have you tried to return to the light? How can you continue to fight against darkness? See 1 Corinthians 10:13 for encouragement.
  3. Who can you encourage in faith today? As we focus on darkness and our sin, it can be hard to feel worthy of the light that Jesus brings. But we were chosen by God! He promised that we would be part of His family. Today, let that fill you with joy and find a way to share God’s love with another believer. Buy them a cup of coffee, mow their lawn, or surprise them with a cooked dinner!

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I am sorry for the things I do that fail to live up to Your instruction and love. Help me to avoid the darkness of sin and let me focus on Your goodness and light. Thank you for Your forgiveness. Amen.
