More Than You Can Handle

DAY 1 OF 5

Bring It All Down a Notch

Life happens. Calamity comes. Grief sneaks in. And for some reason, we’re often compelled to add more to our already overwhelmed mind, body, and soul.

The world whispers, “Do more. Be more. Live your best life.” But, your best life right now might look like taking a shower and putting on jeans instead of PJ pants.

This unforeseen chapter might be a good time to consider avoiding the temptation to:

  • clean out every corner of your home
  • create a Pinterest-worthy life for your family
  • hang out with exhausting people
  • compete in a world championship CrossFit competition
  • hold yourself to pre-crisis standards

Good news. It’s really OK to bring it all down a notch. Here are a few ideas for staying afloat until the storm passes:

  • Stop. Close your eyes, and breathe deeply.
  • Take a stroll and inhale the wonder of God’s creation around you.
  • Phone a life-giving friend who makes you laugh.
  • Watch a mindless movie.
  • Lower expectations for yourself and those you love.

You’re stronger than you think you are. The days will not always be this hard. You are not alone.

Isaiah 41:10 says, “Don’t panic. I’m with you. There’s no need to fear for I’m your God. I’ll give you strength. I’ll help you. I’ll hold you steady, keep a firm grip on you” (MSG).

What is one thing you could do today to be kind to yourself?

Do that thing!
