Samuel — Prophet and Leaderনমুনা

Samuel — Prophet and Leader

DAY 10 OF 15

Samuel’s Reaction to Disappointment

When Samuel had become an old man, the people asked for a king. They rejected Samuel and his sons as their leaders, and wanted a king instead—just like the neighboring countries. In a way, they thereby despised their special position as a people belonging to God.

Samuel was displeased by their request. He was not just personally disappointed, but thought it was unwise to ask for a king. In such a situation, he could have used his authority to try to persuade the people. But Samuel chose another strategy. He prayed to the LORD. In this difficult time of disappointment and worry, Samuel sought God’s help—just like Moses did when some of the Israelites rejected him. And when God told Samuel to indeed give the people a king (after a severe warning), he obeyed.

Samuel’s attitude showed faith and humility. He submitted himself to God’s will, even though he was deeply troubled.

If you are displeased, hurt, or worried, what do you do? Follow Samuel’s example, and bring it all to God in prayer.

About this Plan

Samuel — Prophet and Leader

In the first centuries of their existence as a people, the Israelites had no king. Instead, God appointed prophets and judges to lead them. The last prophet-judge was Samuel. He was a faithful leader who wanted to serve the Lord and to seek the best for his people. This reading plan takes you through Samuel’s life in 15 days and contains valuable lessons that are still relevant today.
