Before the Resurrection

DAY 5 OF 7

On Good Friday, we (hopefully) spend time thinking about the cross of Jesus. This is the day we remember Jesus’ sacrifice as He died for the sins of the world. We think of the Cross and the pain and suffering of Jesus. We contemplate His passion and remember His pain. All of these things are wrapped up in the Cross, and on Good Friday, we think about the Cross.

It is also important that we consider not just the Cross, but the sacrifice made on that Cross. Jesus was killed. No one did it to Him, but rather, He chose to offer Himself up as a sacrifice. The Lamb who was slain from the foundations of the world was slain in human history on the Cross on Good Friday. John the Baptist describes Him as “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” The writer of Hebrews tells us Jesus was the one full, perfect, and complete sacrifice. No other sacrifice can be offered sufficient enough, but then, no other is needed. The sacrifice for our sin has been made. It is a full sacrifice. It is a perfect sacrifice. It is a complete sacrifice. He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes, we are healed. This is the sacrifice on the Cross, for our sin. It is full, perfect, and complete. It is everything we need. No wonder it is called “Good Friday.”
