Finding Peace During Troubled Times

DAY 2 OF 7

LOOK UP AND WORRY NOT!

When life is interrupted by a disaster or a traumatic experience, it’s natural to panic and let worry set in. The thought of not knowing how things will pan out can cause many of us to feel hopeless and afraid. And the vexing question, why is this happening? runs continuously in our minds.

Yet, we shouldn’t be surprised when troubled times befall us. Jesus forewarned in his “Farewell Discourse” that we will face hardships in the world, “But, take heart,” Jesus said, “For I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). This phrase, “take heart,” carries the idea of being courageous. What Jesus spoke to His disciples in the Upper Room that night, and what He is saying to us today is not to let the worries of life weigh you down, but look to the “weight of glory” that we have in Christ. Paul captures it beautifully in 2 Corinthians 4:17, “Our temporary minor problems are producing an eternal stockpile of glory for us that is beyond all comparison” (CEB).

Elsewhere, Paul exhorts Christians to “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory” (Colossians 3:2-4).

According to Paul, your central focus is to look heavenward, where Christ is—ruling and reigning in glory and power!

With this in mind, there’s no reason to stress out and let the worries of this world bring you down. Just like looking at a compass to know where north is, so too must you “look up” to navigate through troubling times. God sees and knows what you and your family are going through. Trust in Him, and rest in knowing that He will give the peace and protection that you and your family need.

So, we say to you, dear friend, TAKE HEART! Be of great courage because no matter what you are going through in this world, God is on the throne.

As a follower of Christ, you’re not to look to the world for comfort and peace—but to Jesus, who is the Prince of Peace!

So, on this day, turn from your worries by looking to Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of your faith.

Prayer: Oh Lord, I look to you during these troubled times in my life, and ask that you take away my anxiety and fill me with Your everlasting peace. Help me to set my mind on things above and be about the work that you have called me to do on earth. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Action Steps: Take a step back and evaluate what is adding to your worry. After you’ve made a list, reach out to a trusted friend or mentor for support and prayer.
