Burn Your White Flags (Hebrews)

DAY 16 OF 29

Have you ever wondered where the idea of 'progress' comes from?

In the divorce of 'Church' and 'State', we’ve come to believe that the Church was granted custody of 'conserving' things while the State was left with 'progressing' things. It’s no wonder why our secular humanist culture, which does have redeeming elements, aligns itself far more readily with 'progressives' as opposed to 'conservatives'.

While the Church should align itself with a third way of the Kingdom it’s often associated with the idea that it exists for the conservation of old traditional values. But there is another, better, way.

What we see in our text is God progressing the world further towards His ends through His work through humanity. You see, humans were granted authority over the Earth and we’ve failed miserably to exercise that power in a way that brings flourishing, and we see this today through both personal failings and institutional corruption that has led to a myriad of devastating issues in the world. And even when God instituted a new way through Moses and His people Israel, we continued to fail. We need another, better, way.

The author of Hebrews reminds us that “Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises” (Hebrews 9:6).

And this is good news

It is good news because the way towards life will no longer be written on stone, but on our hearts.

It is good news because from the least to greatest we will all know God.

It is good news because God will remember our sins no more.

Jesus. Jesus is the better way.
