Loving God with All Your Mind
When Jesus was asked what is the greatest commandment, Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.” Matt 22:37-38 NIV
Our mind holds our intellect and it’s the place that knowledge is stored. Our memories are stored in our mind. Anxiety and fear comes from our mind. Have you ever had one of those days when your mind is racing in what feels like a million directions? This is a mind not under control. Well, maybe it is under control. Just not under the control of God’s words.
Proverbs. 3:5 tells us that we are not to lean on our own understanding but in all our ways acknowledge him and he will direct our paths.
Have you ever heard the phrase you’re making a mountain out of a molehill? This happens when we think about something so much that it becomes larger than life. We are arguing back and forth in our minds about an issue or replaying a conversation over and over. According to 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV, "We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."
I am a chronic over-thinker and I’ve made many molehills into mountains, creating anxiety that I didn’t even need to go through.
In Philippians 4:8 we are encouraged to think on those things that are true, right, noble, loveable, praiseworthy. I had a friend tell me one time that you can’t think two thoughts at the same time. So, you can’t think an anxious thought and a peaceful thought at the same time. You get to pick which thought you entertain. So, I think that loving God with all our mind looks like Philippians 4:8 and 2 Corinthains 10:5. We take those anxious thoughts and we replace them with what the word of God says about our situation.
Today, no matter what is going on in your life, think about those things that are pleasing to God.
To get more out of this devotional, using a 3x5 card, write down Philippians 4:8 and 2 Corinthians 10:5. Meditate on these verses today letting them go deep into your heart so you can take your thoughts captive.
