Perfectionism

DAY 2 OF 3

Perfectionism can isolate you from other people. You’re afraid that others might see you fail. You don’t want to get too close to people for fear that they’ll see who you really are.

Community is an antidote to the crushing burden of perfectionism.

Romans 12 shows how God designed community to help people grow together.

“Be transformed by the renewing of your minds,” Paul wrote not to one individual but to the entire Christian community in Rome. “Then you will discern what is the will of God” (Romans 12:2).

By renewing their minds alongside one another, each member of the community would be transformed. By working together, each person would know God’s will for them.

Erin found freedom from her perfectionism by joining a group of Christians committed to learning and growing together. Through their sharing, Erin learned that each person had his or her own struggles. This helped Erin see herself in a different light.

“In our group, we had people that came from all different types of professions,” Erin says. “I always thought if I made it to the top of my profession, then everything would be good. But I met people who are doctors and lawyers and salespeople and pastors. And we're all dealing with the same thing."

"I realized it wasn't that I was a bad worker. This is what it means to be human."

When you take a step towards other people, you step away from the isolation of perfectionism.

Prayer: God, put people in my life who can reflect your truth back to me. Help me invest in relationships where we can renew each other. Lead us together in our imperfections. You are perfect, God. Amen.
