What a Wonderful World
By Danny Saavedra
“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’”—Romans 10:14-15 (NIV)
So often I dream of a world where Christian values and the truth of Scripture would permeate every aspect of culture, from the highest offices of government to media to entertainment and to education. I’m sure I’m not alone in this.
Here’s the thing, though . . . although most of us can agree we’d love to be part of that kind of world, how many of us are willing to do what’s necessary to make that world more than just a pipe dream?
We want people to call on the name of Jesus and live according to Christian values, but as Paul tells us in today’s passage, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in?” We can’t expect others to follow Christian beliefs if they don’t believe in Jesus. And “how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?”
God has given us the honor of being His ambassadors, “as though God were making his appeal through us” (2 Corinthians 5:20 NIV). Want the world to be more Christ-like? We need to show them Christ! Want to live in a world full of believers? We need to preach the gospel! Want to see people in the world reconciled to God? We need to serve as ministers of reconciliation!
God could have used any method to share the good news of Jesus with the world, but He chose to include us in His glorious work of redemption and salvation. God has called us to come alongside Him and be His hands and feet to a lost and dying world.
Paul asks, “And how can anyone preach unless they are sent?” My friend, you have been sent! Jesus said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19 NIV, emphasis added). He said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15 NIV, emphasis added). We have been sent, and He has given us His Spirit to carry out this wonderful work. Not everyone will receive the message . . . but those who do will say, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
