In today’s culture, there is not a whole lot of understanding around the word “meek.” Some people think it means weak, because it sounds a little like that. But to the Jewish culture that Jesus was addressing, the word “meek” would have carried incredible significance.
“Meeking” was a term used to harness a horse. In Jesus’s day, horses were an extremely vital part of civilization. They were used for farming, the production of goods, for transportation, and for battle. But the “meeking” process that the horse had to undergo was how they directed all of that power and energy, and directed it to do something meaningful and useful. Meekness is all about taking something powerful, and placing it under control.
This is what God wants to do with you and me. If I lived my life on my own, followed my plan, held tightly to my agenda, I usually end up wrecking everything - for me & others.
Today, try praying something like this: “God, help me to understand meekness, to submit my power under your control. Steer my energy and passions in the direction you want me to go so I can live for your purposes over my own agenda.”
