Day 4: Love Like You
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:3-5 (NIV)
I don’t know about you, but the more I learn about Jesus, the more I want to be like Him! If you read the New Testament, you’ll see the way Jesus interacted with people. He didn’t just talk the talk. He was a man who walked the walk!
Jesus loved unconditionally. He forgave easily. He was patient and kind; loyal and trustworthy; gentle and compassionate. Do you know people who live like this? People who live with the same level of integrity that Jesus modeled for us during His 33 years on earth? Simple virtues like kindness, goodness, gentleness and faithfulness seem rare. I think it’s because we live in a me-first society.
That’s what’s so radical about the message of the Gospel. Jesus presents the idea of an others-first society. He always lived His life in a way that served others. He wants us to live that way; He wants us to love that way.
1 John 4:16-17, 19 says, “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus… We love because he first loved us.”
We possess the power to love others, because Jesus loves us. It sounds easy, but it’s a hard reality to live out.
In my song, “Love Like You,” I plead with God to make me more like His Son when I ask, “Show me the way to capture Your heart / To give grace to my brother and help my sister / Help me to forgive those who may have wronged me / Even to love my enemies.”
It’s a prayer I pray often: Lord, help me to forgive. Help me to love my enemies. In a world that’s constantly divided, it’s an important prayer to pray.
No matter how busy we are this week, may we all take the time to love like Jesus.
