Help Them Remember!
Rex Stump
Ready:
"They did not remember his power and how he rescued them from their enemies. They did not remember his miraculous signs in Egypt…” Psalm 78:42-43a
Set:
One of the greatest coaching challenges I faced took place on football field. I drew up the play, knowing that if our team executed the play to perfection it was a guaranteed touchdown. Our quarterback stepped up to the center, checked his offensive line, looked at the defense, and barked out the cadence. The ball was snapped, he dropped back, and then total chaos took place!
One lineman went the wrong direction, another went out for a pass, our receiver went left instead of right, and the running back went right instead of left! How can I blame them, after-all, they were just eight-year-olds? I asked them "what happened"? They replied, “we couldn't remember what we were supposed to do.” In Psalm 78, Asaph retells the history of the Jewish nation of deliverance to King David's reign. God's people struggled with listening and obeying commands. Their rebelliousness seemed to stem from the fact that they forgot about God, His character, His power, and His deeds.
We all tend to forget things. Whether it's our assignment on the field or in the classroom, we sometimes forget. But let's also clearly state that when we forget something, there is always a consequence. Some consequences are greater than others.
Let's avoid the forgetfulness with God. Instead REMEMBER! It is our duty to listen carefully and obey. It is also our duty daily teach and remind one another to always remember God!
Go:
1. Write down how you’ve seen God at work.
2. What is your plan to daily remember the words and works of God?
3. Who will you ask to remind you, and who will you help remember the power God?
Workout:
2 Timothy 3:16
Psalm 34:10-12
Psalm 86:10-12
Overtime:
Heavenly Father, you are strong, Holy, and loving,! Give me the discipline to daily learn about you, and the ability to share and teach others about your miraculous truths, and commands.
