Sex, Purity, And The Longings Of A Girl's Heartনমুনা
Made by Design
God intentionally created each one of us to be sexual beings. He designed us this way on purpose and for a purpose. He wants to steer our affections in the right direction. From a place of love, He gives us beautiful parameters for how to embrace our sexuality in the right ways. He creates us as sexual beings to teach us spiritual truths about Himself. He creates us with an ache for intimacy to draw us into an authentic relationship with Him. He creates us to be ultimately and completely satisfied in Him.
So much of the confusion surrounding our sexuality is a result of being influenced by the world. The only way to redeem our sexuality is to turn back to the One who created us. Instead of continuing to listen to the world and our sinful hearts, we need to be discipled by the One who designed us. The One who understands our sexuality and has a good and beautiful plan for it.
Because the story of Adam and Eve from our Genesis reading today is so familiar, it is easy to brush over the details. But when we pause and look a little closer, we see profound truths. We see God’s intentional design in making us male and female. Nothing was shameful or embarrassing about our sexual design. We see God’s beautiful plan for sexual intimacy, created within the context of the marriage relationship. We see God’s purposeful act in creating two distinct genders. And in all this, we see God at the center of everything as He intentionally created human beings to be His image bearers.
The sexual pain and confusion we each face today are a direct result of Adam’s and Eve’s initial sins. We easily cast judgment, but the truth is, we’re a lot more like Adam and Eve than we realize. We’re tempted to question God’s provision and truth on a regular basis. Did God really say I should reserve sex for marriage? If I feel a certain way, wouldn’t God want me to be true to my feelings? We don’t believe God, so we turn away.
Regardless of what era, country, or society we look at, sexual chaos always follows the rejection of God as Creator and Authority. The more a society moves away from God, the more convoluted and distorted sexuality becomes. This is exactly what’s happening in our world today.
In what ways do you question God’s design on sexuality? In what ways have you felt alone in your struggles with sexual sin?
