Peter tells the younger people and all of the other members of the church, who may inevitably become the church leaders, to submit to leadership and remain humble. Peter quotes Proverbs 3:34 to support the importance of a humble attitude. A humble attitude prepares the way for selfless service and a teachable spirit. When the congregation is humble, the entire church is exhibiting the characteristics of Christ by putting God first and then elevating one another before themselves. Neither submission nor humility are natural inclinations or instincts. They are Spirit-born and require deliberate focus and yielding to the Spirit.
