Debtless

DAY 3 OF 7

Find a Mentor:

The wisest man in the world—King Solomon had just about the most to say about asking others for wisdom. Joshua had Moses, Elisha had Elijah, Timothy had Paul, and the disciples had Jesus. For those of you who love movies like Star Wars, another way to put it is: Everybody needs a Yoda (mentor) in their life!

I love the verse that says: "walk with the wise and grow wise.” There’s value in seeking wisdom and counsel of older, more experienced people who have been where you want to go. I learned from a young age to ask as many questions as I could. I’ve heard it said, "Smart people learn from their own mistakes, but really smart people learn from other people's mistakes." That’s what mentoring is all about.

In my own life, I have been fortunate enough to have a handful of life-changing mentors over the last decade. I asked one mentor while I was in high school if he could do college all over again, what would he do differently? He said he’d take on less debt in order to graduate from college. He’d gone to a very expensive private college and wished he hadn't taken on so many student loans.

I am thankful for one mentor whose advice helped me realize I wanted to graduate college without any student loans. Now, I love to “pay it forward” and am happy to mentor others any chance I get.

So go find a mentor who’s been where you want to go. Maybe they are a parent, a pastor, a professor or teacher. Ask questions. Learn from their successes and their failures. Their wisdom is more valuable than you realize.

Prayer:  Lord, today I reach up to you. I ask you for mentors who can call greatness out of me and who can share their experiences for your glory and my benefit. I also want to be available to share your light and your love to the next generation. So would you place others in my path even today, Holy Spirit, who you can encourage through my life and testimony of all that you've done?
