Spirit gifts: Prophesying
When Jesus ascended into heaven, he was not abandoning the believers. In fact, he assured them repeatedly before he “left” that his eyes would be on them, his heart with them, and his ears open to their prayers. Furthermore, he promised to send a mighty deluge of the Holy Spirit, who would strengthen and enlighten them for their lives of ministry.
The Spirit also brings gifts, and each believer has a unique combination. Nobody can say, “I’ve got nothing” or “God doesn’t need me.” “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If someone’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith” (Romans 12:6). The word "prophesy" in Scripture has various meanings. In its narrowest sense, it means to have the ability to foretell the future, a rare, special gift that God chose to give occasionally in Bible times. In a wider sense it simply denotes the ability to proclaim and explain God’s Word publicly and clearly and compellingly.
That’s where the church today is so blessed — when it recognizes people gifted for communicating the Word and puts them to work. Do people recognize that gift in you? Have you ever led a Bible study? Who in your life is the best Word-proclaimer? Thank you, Holy Spirit, for all who prophesy well.
