God’s Purposes
No matter what changes happen in your life, God remains the same. He continues to do what He’s always done. He still saves, heals, delivers, and loves you. He still watches over you and orders your steps. His purposes for you and mankind have not changed or been amended.
What are God’s purposes? Well, His primary purpose is to rescue sinners. Jesus came to lay down His life for you, for me, and every other human on this planet. Even if your world has come to a grinding halt, Jesus hasn’t stopped acting like Jesus for one minute. He came to bring mankind back into fellowship with God, and He’s still doing it, every day.
God’s next purpose is to fill His children with His Holy Spirit. The Book of Acts records five times when new believers are filled with the Spirit (Acts 2:4; 8:15-18; 9:10-18; 10:34-38; 19:1-6). There is nothing in Scripture that suggests baptism in the Spirit has ceased. The opposite is true: God wants all believers to have this power. The Holy Spirit can edify you (Jude 20), guide you (Rom. 8:14), and help you pray when you don’t know what to pray (Rom. 8:26). No wonder He wants you to be Spirit-filled!
Next, God’s purpose is to help born-again, Spirit-filled believers grow up spiritually. Becoming mature believers is what the epistles are all about. When a person is born again, he is a baby Christian. There is nothing wrong with being a baby—we all started that way. But God doesn’t want any of us to remain babies. Babies can’t do much for themselves, which means that they require a lot of care from someone else. Just as any good father would desire, God wants us to grow up and live productive lives. That is why He has given us instructions for growth in the epistles.
None of God’s primary purposes have changed; He’s still focused on them. It is important for us to stay focused on them as well. It comforts me to know that He never changes His general purposes or His specific purposes for my life. In the same way, His purposes for you stay the same, even if everything else may be in a state of change.
About this Plan
In today’s fast-paced, unstable, constantly-changing world it’s easy to feel like things are spinning out of control and nothing ever stays the same. But in the midst of life’s chaos, there is one thing that never changes, and that is God’s love for you and His covenant with you. These seven devotionals can help establish you on the Rock and give you a firm foundation of peace in Christ.
