Uncontainable Wildfire
Psalm 63:1 “O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.”
Have you ever gone for a long period of time without eating? I’m not talking about 30 minutes for those of you who are hungry all the time. I’m talking about days and not hours. I remember doing a 17-day fast with just water. My body was constantly cramping and almost doubled me over. I specifically remember walking into the kitchen on the 10th day and smelling Oreos that were in the cabinet, locked in a Ziploc bag. My whole body started cramping and my stomach was crying out to be fed.
It’s no surprise that our bodies go completely haywire when we do not eat. Food is meant to sustain us and if we don’t eat, then eventually we will die of hunger. Our spiritual life is no different. When the Oreo moment happened to me, I remember the Lord saying that He wanted me to feel that same longing for Him. The kind of longing that says I cannot survive without Him. Since that day, I made the decision that I will pursue Him with all that I have.
We can no longer afford to be complacent in our pursuit. If we want to be used powerfully by God, then we first have to be consumed by God. This is something that should never go away. This is something that you don’t “mature” out of. God is infinite and those who seek Him will never come to the fullness of knowing Him. I long to be like those men in the Bible who gave their lives in this incredible pursuit.
In his book “The Pursuit of God,” A.W. Tozer describes this longing pretty well when he says, “Come near to the holy men and women of the past and you will soon feel the heat of their desire after God. They mourned for Him, they prayed and wrestled and sought for Him day and night, in season and out, and when they had found Him, the finding was all the sweeter for the long seeking...complacency is a deadly foe of all spiritual growth.”
I pray that this desire burns in you like fire shut up in your bones. I pray that you are awakened in the night with an aching to know Him more. I pray that He consumes you and that you never become complacent in your pursuit of Him.
