Lent Devotional: Restoreনমুনা
Restore: Ashes and crowns
“...to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” (Isaiah 61:3)
I was 16 years old when I first learned what brokenness meant. My father took me aside after school one day and told me he was leaving our family. In that moment, it felt as though the whole world was breaking.
Looking around the world today, it can feel as though brokenness is everywhere – in our governments, in our communities, in our hearts, and yes, even in the church.
But brokenness is never the end. All of heaven pulsates to the rhythm of hope – the hope that emanates from a God who says, “I will take those ashes and turn them into the most beautiful crown you’ve ever seen.”
What ashes are there in your life? Take a moment to hold them in your mind, then give them fully to God, recommitting your trust to him: the restorer.
Almighty and loving Father,
Thank you that you are a God of new beginnings.
We ask for your presence to be with us as we begin the season of Lent.
Please God, take the ashes that are in and around us
and transform them into crowns of beauty, through your restoring love.
In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen.
