Fear Not! A Journey From Fear To Freedom (Part 2)

DAY 20 OF 21

A Day in the Life Of

“Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid. But He said to them, ‘It is I; do not be afraid.’ Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going” (John 6:18-21).

Think about one day in the life of Jesus. Jesus speaks all day to His followers; some 5000 men plus their wives and kids, so probably around 20,000 people in all. These people are mesmerized by His speech, but eventually they get hungry and Jesus has compassion for them and their physical needs. He takes up a collection and gets five small loaves of bread and two small fish, but that is all He needs. When dinner is over, the disciples pick up twelve baskets full of leftovers.

The disciples get in the boat to head to the other side of the sea, leaving Jesus behind. Jesus probably told them He would catch up with them later; little did they know. Jesus doesn’t catch the next boat over; He decides to walk across the sea and He catches up with His disciples, in part because the sea is angry and the guys are having a hard time rowing.

The same story in the gospel of Matthew sheds more light on this story. The disciples, after rowing through the night are only halfway to their destination. “But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary” (Matthew 14:24).

It is at this point where Peter walks on water. “But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’” (Matthew 14:30) Jesus reaches out His hand and saves Peter. Jesus then gets in the boat and the wind ceases immediately, and the next thing the disciples know they are mysteriously on land.

So what about you; do you need a Provider? Jesus fed some 20,000 people with limited resources. Do you need someone to calm the storms in your life? The wind and the sea obey the voice of the Master. Do you need a Savior? Jesus can pull you out of the sea or any pit in which you find yourself. Do you need someone when you’re afraid? Jesus will show up and come in the most unconventional fashion. Do you need a navigator in life? Jesus can get you to your ultimate destination.

Just a normal day in the life of Jesus. Whatever obstacles you are facing today, turn to Him. There is no problem too big for Jesus. “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible" (Matthew 19:26).

Prayer: Lord, all things truly are possible with You. Help me to never forget there is no problem too big, nor anything so insignificant I can’t take to You in prayer. I really cannot think of a good excuse why I should fear anything life throws at me with You as my Savior and Lord. In Jesus name, Amen.
