The Temptation of Jesus
1Then Jesus # Mt 4:1-11; Mk 1:12-13 returned from the Jordan, # Lk 3:3 full of the Holy Spirit, # Lk 1:15,41,67; Ac 2:4; 4:8,31; 9:17; 11:24; 13:9 and was led by the Spirit # Gl 5:18 in the wilderness 2for 40 days # Ex 24:18; 34:28; Dt 9:9,11,18,25; 10:10 to be tempted by the Devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, # Lit were completed He was hungry. 3The Devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

5So he took Him up # Other mss read So the Devil took Him up on a high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world # Is 23:17; Jr 25:26 in a moment of time. 6The Devil said to Him, “I will give You their splendor and all this authority, because it has been given over to me, # 1Jn 5:19 and I can give it to anyone I want. 7If You, then, will worship me, # Lit will fall down before me all will be Yours.”

Worship the Lord your God,

9So he took Him to Jerusalem, had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10For it is written:
He will give His angels orders concerning you,
to protect you, # Ps 91:11 # Ps 91:11 11and
they will support you with their hands,
so that you will not strike
your foot against a stone.” # Ps 91:12 # Ps 91:12
12And Jesus answered him, “It is said: Do not test the Lord your God.” # Dt 6:16 # Dt 6:16
13After the Devil had finished every temptation, he departed from Him for a time.
Ministry in Galilee
14Then Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, # Mt 4:12 and news about Him spread throughout the entire vicinity. # Mt 4:24; 9:26,31; Mk 1:28,45; Lk 4:37; 5:15; 9:60 15He was teaching in their synagogues, # Mt 4:23; 9:35; Lk 4:44; 13:10; Ac 9:20; 13:5 being acclaimed # Or glorified by everyone.
Rejection at Nazareth
16He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. # Lk 2:39,51 As usual, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day # Mt 13:54; Mk 6:1-2 and stood up to read. # Ac 13:14-16 17The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him, and unrolling the scroll, He found the place where it was written:
18The Spirit of the Lord is on Me,
because He has anointed Me
to preach good news to the poor.

to proclaim freedom # Or release, or forgiveness to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set free the oppressed,

20He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. # Mt 26:55 And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21He began by saying to them, “Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled.” # Jn 13:18; 15:25; 17:12; 19:28,36; Ac 1:16; Jms 2:23
22They were all speaking well of Him # Or They were testifying against Him and were amazed by the gracious words that came from His mouth, yet they said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son? ” # Mt 13:55; Mk 6:3; Jn 6:42
23Then He said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb # Or parable to Me: ‘Doctor, heal yourself. So all we’ve heard that took place in Capernaum, # Mt 11:23; Mk 2:1-12; Jn 4:46-53 do here in Your hometown also.’ ”
24He also said, “I assure you: No prophet is accepted in his hometown. # Mt 13:57; Mk 6:4; Jn 4:44 25But I say to you, there were certainly many widows in Israel in Elijah’s days, # 1Kg 17:1; 18:1; Jms 5:17 when the sky was shut up for three years and six months while a great famine came over all the land. 26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them — but to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. # 1Kg 17:8-24 27And in the prophet Elisha’s time, there were many in Israel who had serious skin diseases, yet not one of them was healed # Lit cleansed — only Naaman the Syrian.” # 2Kg 5:1-14
28When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was enraged. 29They got up, drove Him out of town, # Nm 15:35; Ac 7:58; Heb 13:12 and brought Him to the edge # Lit brow of the hill that their town was built on, intending to hurl Him over the cliff. 30But He passed right through the crowd and went on His way. # Jn 10:39
Driving Out an Unclean Spirit
31Then He went down to Capernaum, # Mk 1:21-28 a town in Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbath. 32They were astonished at His teaching because His message had authority. # Mt 7:28-29; Mk 1:22; Jn 7:46 33In the synagogue there was a man with an unclean demonic spirit who cried out with a loud voice, # Mk 1:23-28 34“Leave us alone! # Or Ha!, or Ah! What do You have to do with us, # Lit What to us and to You Jesus — Nazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are — the Holy One of God! ” # Mk 1:24; Jn 6:69
35But Jesus rebuked him # Mt 8:26; Mk 4:39; Lk 4:39,41; 8:24 and said, “Be quiet and come out of him! ” # Mk 1:25; 9:25
And throwing him down before them, the demon came out of him without hurting him at all. 36Amazement came over them all, and they kept saying to one another, “What is this message? For He commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out! ” 37And news about Him began to go out to every place in the vicinity.
Healings at Capernaum
38After He left the synagogue, He entered Simon’s house. # Mt 8:14-17; Mk 1:29-34 Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him about her. # 1Co 9:5 39So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately # Mt 8:3; 14:31; 20:34; Mk 5:42; 10:52; Lk 1:64; 5:13,25; Ac 9:34 and began to serve them.
40When the sun was setting, all those who had anyone sick with various diseases brought them to Him. As He laid His hands on each one of them, He would heal them. # Mt 4:23; Mk 5:23 41Also, demons were coming out of many, shouting and saying, “You are the Son of God! ” # Mt 4:3; 8:29; Mk 3:11 But He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Messiah. # Mt 8:16; Mk 1:34; 3:11-12
Preaching in Galilee
42When it was day, He went out and made His way to a deserted place. # Mt 14:13; Mk 1:35,45; Mk 1:35-38; 6:31-32; Lk 9:12 But the crowds were searching for Him. They came to Him and tried to keep Him from leaving them. 43But He said to them, “I must proclaim the good news about the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because I was sent for this purpose.” 44And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee. # Other mss read Judea # Mt 4:23; Mk 1:39
