John 14

I Am #6: The Way, the Truth, and the Life

1 “Don’t let y’all’s heart be troubled. Y’all believe in God. Y’all should also believe in me. 2In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it weren’t so, I would have told y’all. I am going to prepare a place for y’all. 3If I go and prepare a place for y’all, I will come again and will take y’all to be with me so that y’all may be where I am. 4And where I am going, y’all know the way.”

5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?”

6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.

The Oneness of the Father and Son

7 If y’all had known me, y’all would have known my Father also. From now on, y’all know ʜɪᴍ and have seen ʜɪᴍ.”

8Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”

9Jesus said to him, “Have I been with y’all such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me?

The words I say to y’all, I don’t speak from myself. It is the Father who lives in me, doing ʜɪꜱ works. 11Y’all must believe me that I am in the Father and that the Father is in me; or at least believe because of the works themselves. 12Very truly I tell y’all, anyone who believes in me and the works that I do, they will do these and even greater works, because I am going to my Father. 13Whatever y’all ask in my name, I will do it, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If y’all ask anything in my name, I will do it. 15If y’all love me, y’all will keep my commandments.

Sending of the Holy Spirit

16 I will pray to the Father, and ʜᴇ will give y’all another Counselor to be with y’all forever: 17the Spirit of truth. The world can’t receive ʜɪᴍ, because it doesn’t see ʜɪᴍ and doesn’t know ʜɪᴍ. Y’all know ʜɪᴍ, for ʜᴇ lives with y’all and will be in y’all. 18I will not leave y’all as orphans. I will come to y’all. 19In a little while, the world will see me no more, but y’all will see me. Because I live, y’all will live also. 20In that day y’all will know that I am in my Father, and y’all are in me, and I am in y’all. 21The one who has my commandments and keeps them, that person is one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them, and will reveal myself to them.”

22Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, what has happened that you are about to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?”

23Jesus answered him, “Anyone who loves me will keep my word. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with that person. 24“Anyone who doesn’t love me doesn’t keep my words. The word which you hear isn’t mine, but the Father’s who sent me.

25 “I have said these things to y’all while still living with y’all. 26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach y’all all things and will remind y’all of all that I said to y’all. 27Peace I leave with y’all. My peace I give to y’all. I don’t give to y’all as the world gives. Don’t let y’all’s heart be troubled or fearful. 28Y’all heard me say to y’all, ‘I am going away, and I will come back to y’all.’ If y’all loved me, y’all would have rejoiced because I am going to my Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29Now I have told y’all before it happens so that when it happens, y’all may believe. 30I won’t say much more to y’all, for the prince of the world is coming. He has no hold over me, 31but that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded me. Y’all get up, let’s go from here.
