John 12

12
Mary Anoints Jesus
1Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom he raised from the dead. 2So they made him a supper there. Martha served, but Lazarus was among those who dined at the table with him. 3Then Mary took a pound of pure nard, very precious perfume, and anointed Jesus’s feet and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4Then Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, who intended to betray him, said, 5“Why wasn’t this ointment sold for three hundred denarii#12:5 300 denarii was about a year’s wages for an agricultural laborer. and given to the poor?” 6Now he said this, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief. As the keeper of the money box, he used to steal what was put into it.
7But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She has kept this for the day of my burial. 8For y’all will always have the poor among y’all, but y’all won’t always have me.”
9Now a large crowd of the Jews learned that he was there so they came, not only for Jesus’s sake, but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10But the chief priests planned to kill Lazarus also, 11because on account of him many of the Jews were leaving and believing in Jesus.
Jesus Enters Jerusalem as King
12On the next day a large crowd had come to the feast. When they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13they took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet him, and cried out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,#Psalm 118:25-26 the King of Israel!”
14Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it. As it is written, 15“Don’t be afraid, daughter of Zion. Look, your King comes, sitting on a donkey’s colt.”#Zechariah 9:9 16His disciples didn’t understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him, and that they had done these things to him. 17So the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify about it. 18The crowd went to meet him, because they heard that he had performed this sign. 19So the Pharisees said so one another, “Don’t y’all see that you’ve accomplished nothing? Look, the world has gone after him.”
Jesus Foretells His Death
20Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast. 21Then some of them came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee and asked him, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.” 22Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn, Andrew came with Philip, and they told Jesus.
23Jesus answered them, “The time has come for the Son of Humanity to be glorified. 24Very truly I tell y’all, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25Anyone who loves their life will lose it, and anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it to eternal life. 26If anyone serves me, let them follow me. Where I am, there my deacon will also be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor them.
27 “Now my soul is troubled. What should I say? ‘Father, save me from this moment?’ But for this reason I have come to this moment. 28Father, glorify your name!”
Then a voice came out of the sky, saying, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”
29So the crowd who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”
30Jesus answered, “This voice hasn’t come for my sake, but for y’all’s sakes. 31Now judgment is on this world. Now the prince of this world will be driven out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33But he said to signify the kind of death he would die.
34The crowd then answered him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ will remain forever. How do you say, ‘The Son of Humanity must be lifted up?’ Who is this Son of Humanity?”
35Then Jesus said to them, “Y’all are only going to have the light for a little while longer. Walk while y’all have the light, so that darkness doesn’t overtake y’all. Whoever walks in the darkness doesn’t know where they are going. 36While y’all have the light, believe in the light, that y’all may become children of light.” Jesus said these things, and then he departed and hid himself from them.
Responses to Jesus’s Ministry
37Although Jesus had done many signs in front of them, they still didn’t believe in him. 38This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet, who said:
“Lord, who has believed our report?
To whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”#Isaiah 53:1
39For this reason they couldn’t believe, because again as Isaiah said:
40“Hᴇ has blinded their eyes and ʜᴇ hardened their heart,
so that they would not see with their eyes,
and perceive with their heart,
and would turn,
and I would heal them.”#Isaiah 6:10
41Isaiah said these things when he saw his glory and spoke of him. #Isaiah 6:1 42Nevertheless, even many of the rulers believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they didn’t openly acknowledge it, so that they wouldn’t be excluded from the synagogue, 43for they loved human praise more than praise of God.
44But Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me, but in ʜɪᴍ who sent me. 45The one who sees me sees ʜɪᴍ who sent me. 46I have come as a light into the world, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in the darkness. 47If anyone listens to my sayings and doesn’t believe, I don’t judge that person. For I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. 48Whoever rejects me and doesn’t receive my sayings has a judge. The word that I have spoken will judge them at the last day. 49For I spoke not from myself, but the Father who sent me gave me a commandment as to what I should say and what I should speak. 50I know that his commandment is eternal life. Therefore, the things I say, I say just as the Father has told me.”
