vv 4, 7

Deut 32.36; Jer 26.19; Jon 3.10 The Lord relented concerning this;
“It shall not be,” said the Lord.
4This is what the Lord God showed me: the Lord God was calling for judgment by fire, and it devoured the great deep and was eating up the land. 5#v 2Then I said,
“O Lord God, cease, I beg you!
How can Jacob stand?
He is so small!”

“This also shall not be,” said the Lord God.

1 Kings 12.32; 2 Kings 14.23; Jer 26.8–11 Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the very center of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words. 11#vv 9, 17For thus Amos has said,
‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword,
and Israel must go into exile
away from his land.’ ”
12And Amaziah said to Amos, “O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, earn your bread there, and prophesy there, 13#1 Kings 12.32; 13.1; Am 2.12but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.”

1 Kings 20.35; 2 Kings 2.5; 4.38; 2 Chr 19.2; Am 1.1 Then Amos answered Amaziah, “I am#7.14 Or was no prophet nor a prophet’s son, but I am#7.14 Or was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore trees, 15#2 Sam 7.8; Jer 7.1; Ezek 2.3, 4; Am 3.8and the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’
