Revelation 1

1
Introduction
1The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must happen soon. God made it known by sending his angel to his servant John. 2This is a record of everything he saw, that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. 3Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy out loud, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart everything it says. The time when these things will come true is drawing near.
Greetings and Praise to God
4From John.
To the seven churches in the province of Asia.
May you receive grace and peace from the one who is, and who was, and who is to come; from the seven spirits that are in front of God’s throne; 5and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the first to rise from the dead, the ruler over the kings of the earth.
Jesus loves us and has set us free from our sins by his blood. 6He has made us members of his royal family and priests who serve his God and Father. May he receive glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.
7“Look! He’s coming with the clouds!”
“Every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him.”
All the nations of the earth “will mourn because of him.”
This will happen! Amen.
8“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God. “I am the God who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
John’s Vision of Christ
9I, John, am your brother and your partner in the suffering, the kingdom, and the patient endurance of Jesus. I was on the island of Patmos because of God’s word and the testimony of Jesus. 10I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard a loud voice behind me that sounded like a trumpet. 11The voice said, “Write what you see on a scroll and send it to the seven churches in Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.”
12I turned around to see who was speaking to me. When I turned, I saw seven golden lampstands, 13and in the middle of them I saw someone who looked “like a son of man.” He was dressed in a long robe and he had a gold strip of cloth around his chest. 14The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow. His eyes were like a blazing fire, 15his feet were like bronze metal glowing in a furnace, and his voice sounded like rushing waters. 16He held seven stars in his right hand. A sharp sword with two edges was coming out of his mouth. His face was like the sun shining in all its brightness.
17When I saw him, I fell at his feet as if I were dead. But he put his right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m the First and the Last, 18the Living One. I was dead, but now look! I’m alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys to death and Hades.
19“Write down what you’ve seen, what is, and what’s going to happen after this. 20The seven stars you saw in my right hand have a hidden meaning, and so do the seven golden lampstands. The stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the lampstands you saw are the seven churches.
