3 John 1
1
1From the elder.
To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love truly.
2Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, just as everything is going well with your soul. 3It made me very happy when some believers came and told me that you’re faithful to the truth and that you’re walking in it. 4Nothing makes me happier than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
5Dear friend, you’re faithful in what you’re doing for the brothers and sisters, even though they’re strangers to you. 6They’ve told the church about your love. Please help them by sending them on their way in a manner that honors God. 7They started on their journey for the sake of the Name, and they wouldn’t accept any help from those who weren’t believers. 8We should let people like them stay in our homes. When we do, we’re working together with them for the truth.
9I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be the first in everything, wouldn’t acknowledge me. 10So when I come, I’ll show everyone what he’s doing. He’s saying malicious things about us that aren’t true. And as if that weren’t bad enough, he’s also refusing to welcome other believers, and he’s keeping others from doing so. In fact, if anyone does welcome them, he’s throwing them out of the church.
11Dear friend, don’t imitate those who are doing wrong, but those who are doing good. Anyone who does what’s good belongs to God. Anyone who does what’s wrong hasn’t really seen or known God. 12Demetrius has a good reputation with everyone, and even with the truth itself. We can also vouch for him personally, and you know you can trust our word.
13I have a lot to write to you, but I don’t want to write with pen and ink. 14Instead, I hope to see you soon so we can talk face to face.
15May you have peace.
The friends here send their greetings. Greet each one of the friends there by name.
