Joshua Intro

Intro
About the Book of Joshua
The Israelites were descendants of Jacob. They had travelled for 40 years in the desert while Moses was their leader. All the men that God had brought out of Egypt had died. Moses had died, too. Now God had chosen Joshua to be their leader. He was one of the 12 men who had gone to look at Canaan, the land that God had promised to give to the Israelites. He and Caleb had not been afraid of the people who lived there. He trusted God to help them. The other 10 men had been too afraid. See Numbers 14.
God would not let Moses himself go across the Jordan River into Canaan. Joshua was the person that God wanted to lead the Israelites into the land that would be their new home.
The name ‘Joshua’ means ‘God saves’. The name ‘Jesus’ means the same.
The book of Joshua tells how God helped his people to make Canaan their home. It shows that God did what he had promised to do for his people.
