Intro
About the Book of Joshua
The Israelites had travelled for 40 years in the desert while Moses was their leader. #1:0 The Israelites were the descendants of Jacob, who was also called Israel. Jacob's 12 sons became the ancestors of Israel's 12 tribes. The land that God gave to them as their home was called Israel. All the men that God had brought out of Egypt had died. #1:0 Egypt is a country in Africa that was south of Israel. Pharaohs were the kings of Egypt. Moses had died, too. Now God had chosen Joshua to be their leader. He was one of the 12 men who had gone to look at Canaan, the land that God had promised to give to the Israelites. #1:0 Canaan is the land that God promised to give to Abraham and to his descendants. See Genesis 12:7. He and Caleb had not been afraid of the people who lived there. He trusted God to help them. The other 10 men had been too afraid. See Numbers 14.
God would not let Moses himself go across the Jordan River into Canaan. #1:0 The Jordan River went from Galilee in the north of Israel to the Salt Sea (Dead Sea) in the south. Joshua was the person that God wanted to lead the Israelites into the land that would be their new home.
The name ‘Joshua’ means ‘God saves’. The name ‘Jesus’ also means the same.
The book of Joshua tells how God helped his people to make their home in Canaan. It tells us how God stopped the water in the River Jordan. Then the Israelites could go across into Canaan. It tells us how the Israelites won many battles when they obeyed God.
It shows that God did what he had promised to do for his people.
