Command to Rebuild the Temple
1In the second year of King Darius,#1:1 King of Persia reigned 522–486 BC#Ezr 4:5; Neh 12:22; Dn 9:11; 11:1; Hg 1:15; 2:10; Zch 1:1,7; 7:1 on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet#Ezr 5:1; 6:14 Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,#1Ch 3:19; Ezr 3:2,8; 5:2; Neh 12:1; Hg 1:12,14; 2:2,23; Lk 3:27 the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest:#Hg 1:12,14; 2:2,4; Zch 3:1,8; 6:11
2“The Lord of Armies says this: These people say: The time has not come for the house of the Lord to be rebuilt.”#Ezr 1:3
3The word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: 4“Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses,#1Kg 7:7; Jr 22:14 while this house#1:4 = the temple lies in ruins?” 5Now, the Lord of Armies says this: “Think carefully#Hg 2:15,18 about#1:5 Lit Place your heart on, also in v. 7 your ways:
6You have planted much
but harvested little.
You eat
but never have enough to be satisfied.
You drink
but never have enough to be happy.
You put on clothes
but never have enough to get warm.
The wage earner puts his wages
into a bag with a hole in it.”#Lv 26:20; Dt 28:38–40
7The Lord of Armies says this: “Think carefully about your ways. 8Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house; and I will be pleased with it and be glorified,” says the Lord. 9“You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought the harvest to your house, I ruined#1:9 Lit blew on it. Why?” This is the declaration of the Lord of Armies. “Because my house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.
10So on your account,#1:10 Or So above you
the skies have withheld the dew
and the land its crops.#Lv 26:20; Dt 11:17
11I have summoned a drought
on the fields and the hills,
on the grain, new wine, fresh oil,
and whatever the ground yields,
on people and animals,
and on all that your hands produce.”
The People’s Response

14The Lord roused the spirit#1Ch 5:26; Ezr 1:1,5; Is 13:17; 14:9; 41:10; 45:13; Jr 51:11 of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the spirit of the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people.
