Romans 3

3
1What advantage then does the Jew have? Or what profit is there in circumcision? 2Much in every way! First of all, the oracles of God were entrusted to them. # Ps 147:19–20; Ac 7:38
3What if some did not believe? Would their unbelief nullify the faithfulness of God? # Ro 10:16; Heb 4:2 4God forbid! # Ro 3:6, 31; 6:2, 15; 7:7, 13; 9:14; 11:1, 11 Let God be true, and every man a liar. # Ps 116:11 As it is written:
“That You may be justified in Your words,
and may prevail in Your judging.” # Ps 51:4 # 3:4 Ps 51:4.
5But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? # Ro 3:8; 6:1, 15; 7:7; 9:14, 30 Is God unrighteous in taking vengeance? (I am speaking in human terms.) # Ro 6:19; Gal 3:15 6God forbid! For then how could God judge the world? # Ge 18:25; Job 8:3 7If through my lie the truth of God has abounded more to His glory, why am I still being judged as a sinner? 8Why not rather say, “Let us do evil that good may come,” # Ro 3:5; 6:1, 15; 7:7; 9:14, 30 as we are slanderously accused and as some claim that we say? Their condemnation is just.
The Unrighteousness of Man
9What then? Are we better than they? No, not at all. For we have already charged that both Jews and Gentiles are all under sin. # Ro 3:19; Gal 3:22 10As it is written:
“There is none righteous, no, not one; # Ps 14:1–3; 53:1–3 # 3:10 Ps 14:1; 53:1.
11there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks after God. # 3:11 Ps 14:2; 53:2.
12They have all turned aside;
together they have become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
no, not one.” # Ps 14:3; Ecc 7:20 # 3:12 Ps 14:3; 53:3.
13“Their throats are an open grave;
with their tongues they have used deceit”; # Ps 5:9
“the poison of vipers is under their lips”; # Ps 140:3 # 3:13 Ps 5:9; 140:3.
14“their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” # Ps 10:7 # 3:14 Ps 10:7.
15“Their feet are swift to shed blood; # Pr 1:16; Isa 59:7–8 # 3:15 Pr 1:16; Isa 59:7.
16destruction and misery are in their paths; # 3:16 Isa 59:7.
17and they do not know the way of peace.” # Lk 1:79 # 3:17 Isa 59:8.
18“There is no fear of God before their eyes.” # Ps 36:1 # 3:18 Ps 36:1.
19Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, # Ro 3:9 so that every mouth may be silenced, # Job 5:16 and all the world may become accountable to God. 20Therefore by the works of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, # Ac 13:39; Gal 2:16 for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. # Ro 7:7
Righteousness Through Faith
21But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God is revealed, # Ro 1:17 being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets. # Ac 10:43 22This righteousness of God comes through faith in Jesus Christ # Ro 3:26; Gal 2:16, 20; 3:22; Eph 3:12; Php 3:9 # 3:22 This verse and others can be translated as the faithfulness of Jesus. Also Ro 3:26; Gal 2:16, 20; 3:22; Eph 3:12; Php 3:9 to all and upon all who believe, for there is no distinction. # Ro 10:12; Gal 3:28 23For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, 24being justified freely by His grace # Ro 4:16 through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, # Col 1:14 25whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through faith, # 1Jn 2:2 in His blood, for a demonstration of His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins previously committed, # Ac 17:30 26to prove His righteousness at this present time so that He might be just and be the justifier of him who has faith in Jesus.
27Where is boasting then? # Ro 2:17, 23 It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the works of the law. 29Is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, 30seeing it is one God, # Gal 3:20 who shall justify the circumcised by faith, and the uncircumcised through faith. # Gal 3:8 31Do we then make the law void through faith? God forbid! # Ro 3:4, 6; 6:2, 15; 7:7, 13; 9:14; 11:1, 11 Instead, we establish the law. # Mt 5:17; Ro 8:4
