140
For the Music Director. A Psalm of David.
1Deliver me, O Lord, from evil men; # Ps 18:48; 71:4
preserve me from violent men,
2who devise evil things in their hearts; # Ps 36:4; 56:6
continually do they stir up wars.
3They sharpen their tongues like a serpent’s; # Ps 57:4
under their lips is the venom of vipers. # Ps 58:4 Selah
4Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; # Ps 36:11; 71:4
preserve me from violent men,
who have purposed to make my steps stumble.
5The proud have hidden a snare for me;
they have spread cords as a net;
by the wayside they have set traps for me. # Ps 35:7; 142:3 Selah
6I said to the Lord, “You are my God; # Ps 16:2; 31:14
give ear to the voice of my supplications, O Lord.”
7O God, the Lord, the strength of my salvation,
You have covered my head in the day of battle.
8Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked;
do not further his evil scheme,
lest they be exalted. Selah
9As for the head of those who surround me,
let the evil of their lips overwhelm them. # Ps 7:16; Pr 18:7
10Let burning coals fall upon them;
let them be cast into the fire, # Ps 11:6; 21:9
into deep pits, from which they cannot rise.
11Let not a slanderer be established in the land;
let evil hunt the violent man to overthrow him. # Ps 34:21
12I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, # 1Ki 8:45; Ps 9:4
and justice for the poor.
13Surely the righteous shall give thanks to Your name;
the upright shall dwell in Your presence. # Ps 11:7; 16:11
