Proverbs 17
17
1Better is a dry crust with quietness
than a house full of feasting with strife. # Pr 15:17
2A wise servant will rule over a son who causes shame, # Pr 10:5; 19:26
and will share the inheritance among the brothers.
3The crucible is for silver and the furnace for gold, # Pr 27:21
but the Lord is the tester of the heart. # Ps 26:2
4An evildoer listens to lying lips,
and a liar listens to a spiteful tongue.
5He who mocks the poor shows contempt for his Maker; # Pr 14:31
and he who gloats at calamity will not go unpunished. # Job 31:29
6Children’s children are the crown of old men,
and the glory of children is their father.
7Excellent speech is not fitting for a fool,
much less do lying lips fit a prince.
8A gift is like a charm in the eyes of him who has it;
wherever he turns, he prospers.
9He who covers a transgression seeks love, # Pr 10:12
but he who repeats a matter separates the best of friends. # Pr 16:28
10One rebuke goes deeper into a wise man
than a hundred blows into a fool.
11An evil man seeks only rebellion;
so a fierce messenger will be sent against him.
12Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs # 2Sa 17:8; Hos 13:8
than a fool in his folly.
13He who rewards evil for good, # Ps 35:12
evil will not depart from his house.
14The beginning of strife is like letting out water;
so stop the contention before fighting begins. # Pr 20:3; 25:8
15He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the just, # Ex 23:7; Isa 5:23
both are abominations to the Lord.
16Why is money in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom # Pr 23:23
since he has no heart for it?
17A friend loves at all times,
but a brother is born for adversity. # Ru 1:16; Pr 18:24
18A man devoid of understanding shakes hands in pledge
and guarantees the loan for his neighbor. # Pr 6:1–5; 11:15
19He who loves sin loves strife,
and he who exalts his gate seeks destruction. # Pr 16:18
20He who has a crooked heart does not prosper;
and he who has a deceitful tongue falls into calamity.
21He who begets a fool begets grief,
and the father of a fool is bereft of joy. # Pr 10:1; 19:13
22A heart of cheer does good like a medicine,
but a wounded spirit dries up the bones. # Ps 22:15; Pr 12:25; 15:13
23A wicked man accepts a concealed bribe
to pervert the ways of justice. # Ex 23:8
24The sight of the discerning is toward wisdom, # Pr 14:6
but the eyes of the fool are on the ends of the earth. # Ecc 2:14
25A foolish son brings grief to his father # Pr 10:1; 19:13
and bitterness to her who bore him.
26To punish the righteous is not good,
nor to strike princes for their integrity. # Pr 17:15; 18:5
27He who has knowledge spares his words; # Pr 10:19; Jas 1:19
a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.
28Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is considered wise; # Job 13:5
when he shuts his lips he is deemed a man of understanding.
