Luke 1

1
The Prologue
1Whereas many have undertaken to write a narrative of those things which are most surely believed among us, 2just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses # Jn 15:27; Heb 2:3 and ministers of the word, 3it seemed good to me also, having accurately investigated all things from the very beginning, to write to you an orderly account, # Ac 11:4 most excellent Theophilus, # Ac 1:1 4that you might know the certainty of the things which you have been told. # Jn 20:31; Ac 2:36
The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold
5There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, # Mt 2:1 a certain priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. # 1Ch 24:10 And his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6They were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly. # Ge 7:1; Php 2:15 7But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were now well advanced in years. # Ge 18:11; 1Sa 1:2
8Now while he served as priest before God, when his division was on duty, # 1Ch 24:19; 2Ch 8:14 9according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. # Ex 30:7–8; 1Ch 23:13 10And the whole crowd of people were praying outside at the hour of incense. # Lev 16:17; Rev 8:3
11Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, # Mt 1:20 standing on the right side of the altar of incense. # Ex 40:26–27 12When Zechariah saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. # Ge 32:30; Jdg 6:22; 13:22 13But the angel said to him, “Do not fear, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, # 1Sa 1:17; Ac 10:31 and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. # Mt 1:21 14You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. # Lk 1:58 15For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink, # Lk 7:33 and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. # Jer 1:5; Gal 1:15 16He will turn many of the Israelites to the Lord their God. 17And he will go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, # Mt 11:14; Lk 1:76 to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children # Mal 4:5–6 # 1:17 Mal 4:5–6. and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
18Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man and my wife well advanced in years.” # Ge 15:8; 17:17
19The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. # Da 8:16; Mt 18:10; Lk 1:26 And I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things happen, # Eze 3:26; 24:27 because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their season.”
21The people waited for Zechariah, and wondered why he waited so long in the temple. 22When he came out, he could not speak to them. They perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he made signs to them # Lk 1:62 and remained speechless.
23As soon as the days of his service were fulfilled, he departed to his own home. # 1Ch 9:25 24After those days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she hid herself, saying, 25“Thus the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.” # 1Sa 1:6; Isa 4:1

26In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, # Mt 2:23; Lk 1:19 27to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. # Ge 3:15; Mt 1:18 28The angel came to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored. The Lord is with you. # Jdg 6:12 Blessed are you among women.”
29When she saw him, she was troubled by his words, # Lk 1:12; Ac 10:4 and considered in her mind what kind of greeting this might be. 30But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, # Jdg 6:23; Lk 1:13 Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a Son and shall call His name Jesus. # Isa 7:14; Mt 1:21 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest. # Mk 5:7; Lk 1:35 And the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, 33and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. And of His kingdom there will be no end.” # Da 2:44; 7:27; Heb 1:8
34Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
35The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, # Mt 1:18 and the power of the Highest will overshadow you. Therefore the Holy One who will be born will be called the Son of God. # Ps 2:7 36And behold, your cousin Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age. And this is the sixth month with her who was declared barren. 37For with God nothing will be impossible.” # Ge 18:14; Jer 32:17; Mt 19:26
