Haggai 2

2
The Future Glory of the Temple
1In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, # Hag 1:1 saying: 2Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, saying: 3Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not, in your eyes, as nothing in comparison? # Ezr 3:12 4Yet now be strong, # Zec 8:9 O Zerubbabel, says the Lord, and be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong all you people of the land, says the Lord. Work, for I am with you, says the Lord of Hosts. # Jos 1:9; 2Sa 5:10 5According to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt, # Ex 29:45–46 so My Spirit remains among you. # Ne 9:20 Do not fear.
6For thus says the Lord of Hosts: Once more, in a little while, # Isa 10:25; 29:17 I will shake the heavens and earth, # Hag 2:21 the sea and dry land. 7And I will shake all the nations, and they will come with the wealth of all nations, and I will fill this house with glory, # 1Ki 8:11; Isa 60:7 says the Lord of Hosts. 8The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, # Isa 60:17 says the Lord of Hosts. 9The glory of this latter house will be greater than the former, says the Lord of Hosts. And in this place I will give peace, says the Lord of Hosts.
Blessings on a Defiled People
10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, # Hag 1:1; 2:20 the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying: 11Thus says the Lord of Hosts: Now ask the priests concerning the law, # Lev 10:10–11; Mal 2:7 saying, 12If a man carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and touches with his fold bread or stew, or wine or oil, or any food, will it become holy? # Lev 6:27; Mt 23:19
The priests answered, “No.”
13Then Haggai said, “If one who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of these, will it become unclean?” # Lev 22:4–6
The priests answered, “It will become unclean.”
14Then Haggai said, So it is with this people, and so it is with this nation before Me, says the Lord, and so with every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean. # Isa 1:11–15
15Now consider from this day onward: from before stone was laid upon stone in the temple of the Lord, # Ezr 3:10 16from those days when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were but twenty. # Hag 1:6 17I struck you and all the labor of your hands with blight and mildew and hail; # Dt 28:22; 1Ki 8:37 yet you did not turn to Me. 18Consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day when the foundation of the temple of the Lord was laid, # Hag 2:15; Zec 8:9 consider: 19Is the seed yet in the barn? As of yet, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing. # Hab 3:17
But from this day on I will bless you. # Mal 3:10
The Promise of God to Zerubbabel
20The word of the Lord came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month: 21Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, # Ezr 5:2; Hag 1:1 saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth. # Hag 2:6–7 22I will overthrow the throne of the kingdoms. I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overthrow the chariots and their riders. # Mic 5:10 The horses and their riders will come down, every one by the sword of his brother. # Jdg 7:22
23On that day, says the Lord of Hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel My servant, the son of Shealtiel, says the Lord, and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, # Isa 42:1; 43:10 says the Lord of Hosts.
