God shows up

As he addressed the Israelite nation near the end of his life, Moses realized that he was talking to a young crowd. The older generation by now had almost completely died off, and most of the people listening to him hadn’t seen or couldn’t remember their former lives as slaves, the ten plagues that devastated Egypt, or the parting of the Red Sea.

Moses knew that the people would be sorely tempted by the religious beliefs and practices of the Canaanites, into whose land they would be moving. Canaanites worshiped the god Baal and the goddess Asherah and had developed a complex set of rituals and beliefs around them. But Baal and Asherah never did anything for anybody because they do not exist.

Moses wanted the Israelites to know that their God loved them and cared for them. And—their God showed up: “There is no one like the God of Jeshurun [i.e., Israel], who rides across the heavens to help you and on the clouds in his majesty. The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:26,27). His power not only soars above but stoops down to help his children in their time of need. When the storms of life howl, you can rest in the embrace of his everlasting arms.

The God of Israel is eternal—he is still here. He still loves you. And he still shows up to bring you what you need.
