Finding Purpose, Hope and Joy Through Jesus’ BirthПример
Day 11 – David’s Hope
Jesus is the Son of David. How is that possible when David lived 1000 years before Jesus? Jesus was the fulfillment of a prophecy in 2 Samuel 7:12-16. As the promised Messiah, Jesus comes through the lineage of David. The lineage of Jesus in Matthew 1 follows Joseph’s line and Luke 3 follows Mary’s lineage. Both lines include King David. The title Son of David isn’t just a reference to lineage though. It carries much more significance.
The name Son of David speaks directly of the Messiah—the hope of Israel. When people called Jesus the Son of David, they were declaring Him the Deliverer and the long-awaited Messiah.
Revelation 22:16 says, “I am the Root and Offspring of David.” Isn’t that an interesting statement? Jesus is declaring that He is both the creator of David and a descendant of David. He is humanity and deity.
Approximately 1000 years before Jesus arrived in the manger, David knew his hope was in the coming Messiah. It was through Jesus that David’s throne would be established forever. David’s kingdom would be made sure forever. Jesus was his hope. And He can be yours as well.
Hope or confident assurance can be ours when we trust the words, “Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life” (John 6:47). David’s hope was looking forward in expectation. Our hope can rest confidently on the foundation of the Word of God, the character of God, and the finished work of Jesus. Is your hope resting in the right place? If not, pray and ask God to give you His hope—the confident assurance—this Christmas season.
