The Book of Enoch & the BibleУзор
Style Of The Book Of Enoch
Enoch is written in lyrical style, much like Psalms or the book of Job. Poetry can move us, capture our imaginations, and take us on journeys we never thought possible. Not only is Enoch a book of poetry, but this style is fundamental to its message and content.
In the book of Job, we explore ideas beyond our comprehension. Job, a righteous man, is put through great suffering. God uses the life of Job to prove a point to the satanic powers. But Job is never told about this nor could he possibly understand the nature of what happens to him. When God finally speaks to Job, the Almighty lays out creation, the stars, the angels, and the order of the world and how it functions. These concepts are too great and complex for our minds to grasp fully.
So they are delivered to us in poetry. This format helps us to disconnect from cold reason and understand the majesty and wonder of what God is telling us. Even the hardship of Job becomes a flow of emotion and suffering instead of a recounting of negative events.
Enoch is largely the same kind of book as Job. The people before the flood were suffering from great evil. The satanic powers of Genesis 6:1-7 were oppressing and corrupting them. People wondered if God was really in control of these events, so the ministry of Enoch takes us on a journey of discovery. What are angels and fallen angels up to? Will God punish the wicked? How do the world and stars function? What is the nature of the afterlife? Is there salvation with God?
Through poetry, the Book of Enoch takes us to the heavens and even lays out the course of human history from beginning to end. We see the chambers of the winds, the pillars of the earth, the stars, the throne-room of God, the coming Son of Man, and visit the afterlife to hear of its promises. These are concepts that can only be explored through poetic language and imagery.
The Book of Enoch shares more connections with the Bible than mere style, and we’ll explore some of those next.
