FAITHFUL (Psalm 89)

Today we come to the end of the third section of the book of Psalms, known as the Leviticus Psalms. Without a doubt, they have ushered us into the presence of God and shown us what a joy it is to live there every day.

Psalm 89 is lengthy - 52 verses - but it is powerful! We will not go through it verse-by-verse in this plan, but I encourage you to read it today in its entirety. Read it aloud if possible, and on your knees. Read it slowly. Allow the Lord to use it to speak to your own heart. It will minister to you in a big way.

This is an Instructional Psalm, just as the previous one is. There are 13 such psalms in all. As beautiful as it is, Psalm 89 is not intended to make you feel better; it is intended to make you think differently.

Psalm 89 is also a Messianic Psalm. People may disagree about which psalms fit into that category. All the Psalms speak about the Lord, but many of the Psalms speak directly about Christ. It is believed that Psalm 88 was about the darkness Christ had to go through, while Psalm 89 is about His victory. Either way, this psalm has the Lord Jesus all through it, and I hope you get to know Christ in a greater way after studying it.

Verse 1: “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.”

Psalm 89 is not just about instruction or the Messiah. It is about the mercy of God in all of our lives. One element of his mercy is woven throughout the entire passage. See if you can notice what it is...

Verse 2: “For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.”

Verse 5: “And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O Lord: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints.”

Verse 8: “O Lord God of hosts, who is a strong Lord like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?

Verse 24: “But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.”

Verse 33: “Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.

Verse 37: “It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.”

In 52 verses there are many truths, but one overall theme: the faithfulness of our God.

It is wonderful that He is merciful. But if His mercy ran out, we would be in trouble. His mercy is faithful; it endures forever.

His holiness is matchless, unparalleled. He is the thrice holy God. But if He were holy only for a time, we would be in trouble. His holiness is faithful.

We have read much in the Leviticus Psalms about the presence of God. But His presence is not just for a moment. It is all-sufficient and continues for all time.

He is the faithful God.

As we close this section of Psalms, take a moment to thank the Lord for being faithful. He never changes. All of us have been unfaithful to God so many times. We can get disgusted with ourselves as we recall our unfaithfulness to God. But there has never been a single time when the Lord was unfaithful to me.

He is faithful to the very end. He will never leave us, and He will never forsake us (Hebrews 13:5-8). Our Christ is faithful and true.

There are seven references to the faithfulness of God in this Psalm, and each one connects to something unique. Mark them in your Bible and make a note of what each verse represents.

In verse 1, it is connected to all time. God is faithful no matter what era it is. Everything changes except Him.

In verse 2, it is connected to Heaven. Everything on Earth is changing, but Heaven is always the same.

In verse 5, it is connected to His people. God’s faithfulness is most appreciated and enjoyed by His saints because they have seen His unchanging mercy in their own lives.

In verse 8, it is connected to all circumstances. No matter what is going on around you today, God is faithful.

In verse 24, it is connected to Christ. This is speaking about the coming Messiah. Christ is the Faithful One (Revelation 19:11). He was faithful to God in every way, and now He is faithful in His promises to us.

In verse 33, it is connected to His loving kindness. Every good gift and every blessing comes from our unfailing, faithful God!

In verse 37, it is connected to His intercession. The Lord Jesus was not just faithful when here on Earth. He is faithful now to pray for us (Romans 8:26), and to His promise that He is preparing a place for us. He is faithful in the promise that He will come again and receive us unto Himself (John 14:3).

The faithfulness of God is wrapped up in Jesus Christ, and it is connected to every need we have in life. Thank God today for His faithfulness. By the grace of God, determined to be faithful to Him!
