We brought Phil onto the A21 team to help launch our first safe house in Greece. He hadn’t ever met us when Nick set up a meeting to ask him to join the team, but we knew of his character and ability. The offer to move to Greece to work to end human trafficking was never a part of Phil’s plan, but he couldn’t deny that this was an answer to the prayer he had been praying: “God, break my heart for what breaks yours.” Feeling unqualified, he accepted the baton that was thrust toward him.

Our race would be easy if God kept us in the “strength zone” in our lives, but instead, he consistently pushes us into our “weakness zone,” because it is in our weakness that he is made strong. The enemy doesn’t want us to fulfill our destiny, but when we say yes to God, we step onto the winning team--his team--just as Phil did.

I see evidence of this principle in the New Testament when the apostle Peter and the disciples were on a boat in the middle of a storm. It happened right after Jesus had performed the miracle of feeding the five thousand with one little boy’s lunch, and they had set sail across the sea of Galilee in a boat.

A serious storm arose, and they began to be tossed about, growing more and more afraid as the storm intensified. Though Peter was no novice to witnessing Jesus’ miracles, and all that God could do, he was still fearful. For Peter, yesterday’s miracles didn’t outweigh the fear of today’s dangers. As the story goes, Jesus went out to meet them in the storm, without the help of a boat.

When Peter saw Jesus coming toward them, Jesus bid Peter to come, and he stepped off the boat walking toward Jesus. But suddenly the storm got his attention again, and he began to doubt. That’s when he began to sink.

It’s interesting how storms and trials can cause our faith to grow. When Peter began to sink, Jesus reached out to him saying, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:31). Peter’s faith grew when he stepped out on the water with Jesus, and when Jesus reached out to him to keep him from sinking.

God knows when your weaknesses will be revealed, but he is faithful to step into your weakness with his strength. He is faithful to prove your doubts are unfounded and that he is trustworthy. With this confidence, you can overcome hurdles and obstacles in your divine relay.

Where is God asking you to step next, even though you might feel unqualified?
