Kids Who Are Wise Beyond Their Years ናሙና
A Day in the Life of Joash
I’ve been in hiding for 6 years, but that changed today. You see, Queen Athaliah murdered my entire family when I was just an infant. Since that time, she has been ruling over Judah. She doesn’t know I exist because my aunt Jehosheba has kept me hidden! During this time, they were preparing me for the plan God has for me.
The high priest Jehoiada concocted a sophisticated plan to let the world know of my existence. Earlier today, he sent for the commanders and brought them to the Lord’s temple. He made a covenant with them and put them under oath. Then he brought me out. Boy, were they surprised!
The commanders were ordered to fulfil their guarding stations and some of them were told to guard me with weapons in their hands. They were to put to death anyone who approached and to stay close to me wherever I went.
Then Jehoiada brought me out into public and put the crown on my head. It was an honor to receive a copy of the covenant and be proclaimed king. I was then anointed and the people clapped their hands and shouted, “Long live the king!” Considering I am only 7 years old, I hope I have a long life of service ahead of me.
That wasn’t the most exciting part of the day though! When Athaliah heard all the ruckus, she came to see what was going on. When she saw they had crowned me as king, she yelled “Treason!”
Jehoiada ordered the commanders to seize her and put her to death.
My first day as king was honoring to God because we tore down the temple of Baal and smashed its altars. As I took my place on the royal throne, the people rejoiced. God is once again honored in the land of Judah!
