Honor God by Taking Care of His Temple: Managing your food intake
God invented food as fuel for human bodily activity, as a social event, and to show his goodness by giving it flavor, which brings us no small pleasure.
It’s truly amazing, though, to realize how many other uses people have for meals: self-medicating when under stress (nothing makes you forget your troubles like a box of donuts), rewarding yourself for hard work or some achievement, showing off, or massaging insecurity by stunning your dinner guests into a food coma.
We could all stand to be more intentional about what we shove down the ol’ piehole. Sometimes we eat out of boredom, social pressure, or just plain sugar cravings. Daniel and his friends chose to be very intentional about their food intake. “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food” (Daniel 1:12,15).
God doesn’t demand that you become a vegan. But do think about what you are going to put into your mouth today.
