Calm in the Chaos - Finding Peace Amidst the Storms of Life

DAY 3 OF 5

Happiness Vs. Joy

When we are trying to find calm in the chaos, all too often, we are working like hamsters on a wheel to find the next thing to make us happy, which, unfortunately, fades quickly after the emotion flutters away and is swallowed up by a bigger, badder circumstance with which we are faced. Thus, instead of pursuing happiness in our daily lives, we ultimately should be seeking joy. There is a drastic difference. Happiness is fleeting; joy is forever.

When I was experiencing some hard times in my life, a dear friend hugged me and shared, “Lots of things and people can make me happy, but joy only comes when I’m satisfied in belonging to the Lord.” We can experience a moment of happiness through occurrences, feelings, affirmations from others, etc., but as soon as the tide shifts, we can easily experience sadness.

Joy, on the other hand, is a state of contentment and stability. Unwavering calm in the chaos can be attained by simply being satisfied in belonging to the Lord. Instead of feeling the shifting of sand as happiness turns to sadness, a person with their life built on the Rock remains strong, anchored down with joy, even when they are feeling grief and heartache.

In the book of Nehemiah, the Jewish people are working diligently to rebuild the wall around the holy city. Ezra, the priest, begins to read from the book of the Law, and the people begin to mourn and weep. The power of the Word of God can have this effect on people, as it is living and active and sharper than a two-edged sword. So, Nehemiah then tells the people, “DO NOT be grieved, for the JOY of the LORD is your strength.” Find strength in the LORD, and remember this day is holy. Joy comes from Jesus and is steadfast forever in Him!

Reflection

  • How do you define happiness and joy? Find verses in God’s Word to help define those for you.
  • What are some areas in your life that you are constantly seeking to fulfill your happiness? Ask the Lord to help you find contented joy in those areas instead of settling for fleeting happiness.
  • Why is it hard to “bless the Lord at all times?” Be honest with yourself and with God. He is big enough and strong enough to hear the reasons.
Day 2Day 4

About this Plan

Calm in the Chaos - Finding Peace Amidst the Storms of Life

The world may be a whirlwind, but the Bible teaches us to cling to hope in Christ and find peace even in the most chaotic circumstances. How do we do that, though, when even our daily lives seem to be one constant commotion after another? In this 5-day plan for women, we’ll explore ways to reach out and grab ahold of the Anchor during the tumultuous times the world throws our way.
