Passing the Baton: Part II

Today, we’re discussing how leaders might pass the baton to their successors. Jesus only spent three years in ministry, yet He has billions of followers today.

Identifying Jesus’ approach might be helpful for you and me. After Jesus spent time with His many followers, Jesus took His first big step toward establishing His future leaders. He went to the Lord in prayer and allowed his Heavenly Father to guide Him in His decision.

In Luke 6, we read how Jesus selected His apostles, “Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them.

Jesus prayed all night to get God’s perspective on selecting the right leaders. God knew each person’s heart and directed Jesus accordingly. The disciples were selected not just for who they were then but for who they would become.

Many of the disciples failed rather epically in the Bible. However, the Lord understood how their struggles would grow not only them as individuals, but his plan and his mission to evangelize the earth. On that day even Judas was selected, because he was important too, even if his importance lay in his betrayal.

Our starting point for passing the baton is to ask God for His direction on the right person.

Questions for Reflection

  • What is your goal for your business? When everything is said and done, what do you want the legacy of your company and your work to be? Who can help you achieve that? Who wants the same sort of success that you are seeking for your business?
  • When was the last time you prayed? Who can you pray with? Have you sought out God’s guidance for this decision or any other business decisions?
