IT’S TIME to FLY a 7-Day Devotion by Joy A. Williams

DAY 2 OF 7

Knowing God Can Lead to No Fear

Without sin in the world, fear would have one meaning -- holy awe. It’s a reverence for God. It fuels our worship of Him and our obedience to His ways. But after the Fall of humanity, fear also fell into the darkest of meanings. Trepidation and terror gained access to the soul. They hinder our ability to flourish or follow God’s ways. Hence, if you’ve ever battled this kind of fear, you know it’s not holy. It is hellish.

But the Bible tells us to “fear not” 365 times. As many have observed, that’s one antidote for fear each day of the year! But as many of us have learned, some fears are steeped in deception. They are the worries that weary us but never happen.

And yet, some fears stem from a harsh reality. They taunt us with facts that keep our world in a frenzy. The idea of losing someone or something we love or a traumatic memory that never fades is beyond unsettling. I recall being fearful during the recession of 2008. I thought we’d lose our home, our car, and anything else that represented a regular routine in our lives. As I contemplated the worst, I prayed for my husband and me to find jobs again. I prayed for us to hold on to our home. But during my prayer, I knew God wanted my focus to shift to holding onto Him.

My learning to “fear not” turned into the choice to focus—not on worst-case scenarios but on knowing God is faithful to provide what is needed in every circumstance. I admit, at times, my idea of what is necessary is stretched by His invitation to trust Him more. I’m helped as I focus on His Word. It is the life-giving truth for every anguished soul (Psalm 119:143-144).

Sixteen years later and we’re in the same house today. My focus on knowing God led me to having no fear. (Isaiah 12:2) I repeat the lesson often. Whether we have one thing we dread or a thousand, fear bullies us with a thought of what will or won’t happen. But God emboldens us with His promise: “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10 NLT).

FLY: If you have a fear, does it come from an overactive imagination or an overwhelming reality? Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference. Let’s tell God.

PRAY: Dear God, I’m afraid of __________. Deliver me from what hinders my ability to trust You. Your power is unmatched. Fill me with courage and Your strength to release my fears to You and follow where You lead. In Jesus’ name, amen.
