The Death and Resurrection of the Kingናሙና
One day everyone will have to acknowledge Jesus as King
“And they stripped [Jesus] and put a scarlet robe on Him, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head and put a reed in His right hand. And kneeling before Him, they mocked Him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’” (Matthew 27:28-29)
Before the Lord Jesus went to Jerusalem, He foretold what would happen to Him, the Son of Man: “They will condemn Him to death and deliver Him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified” (Matthew 20:18-19). That was exactly what happened. When Pilate had consented to the crucifixion, Jesus was scourged. This often happened prior to a crucifixion. Then the soldiers took Jesus into the courthouse to mock Him. They took pleasure in dressing this condemned man up like a king and playing their games with Him.
The Lord Jesus chose to suffer this deep humiliation. He did not resist. But one day everyone, including these soldiers, will have to recognize that He is actually the King. Not just of the Jews, but of the whole world. John writes about this in the book of Revelation. “Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him” (Revelation 1:7). At His second coming, Jesus will appear in power and majesty. Then everyone will recognize Him as “Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth.” (Revelation 1:5)
Are you looking forward to that moment, or are you dreading it? Why?
