Jesus Style Leadership 1 - Call & Graceናሙና
Peter’s Call to Lead – Commitment
Leadership Lesson
Jesus-style leadership means following Jesus no matter what the cost.
Read Luke 5:8-11
Comment
The call to leadership for Peter and his mates came out of the blue. One minute they’re unhappily fishing because they’re catching nothing, the next they have caught the biggest haul of fish they have ever seen, and the next they’re giving fishing away to join Jesus’ leadership team. They were seriously under-prepared, and they knew it. Simon recognized that he was nothing like Jesus (5:8). Fishing did not seem to be good preparation for leading people, and yet of Jesus’ 12 disciples, a third were fishermen. It just goes to show that you don’t need special skills or experience to say yes to Jesus’ call to influence people. You just have to be willing to give it a go. Of course, these guys had lots to learn, and it would be years before Jesus could trust them to lead his church. But they had to start somewhere, and this was the moment. Don’t be hampered by your lack of experience or your spiritual immaturity, just say yes to God’s call to Jesus-style leadership (like these guys) and be ready to learn and grow heaps.
Prayer
I don’t feel any more ready to lead people than those guys fishing 2000 years ago. It was a big jump for them and it’s a big jump for me. But I know that you are asking me to influence people, so I’m saying yes, just like Peter and his mates. Teach me. Grow me. Change me. Use me. It’s a privilege to be part of your leadership team Lord.
Personal Reflection
Why do you think Peter and his mates were so excited about joining the mission of Jesus? Has it been hard or easy for you to take on leadership? What do you enjoy? Have you had to give up anything yet?
