Keeping My Eyes on the Prize
Verse - “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14)
Think - A helpful guideline when reading Scripture is based on one word – context. Understanding what the Apostle Paul means in this verse is greatly helped by reading verse 13 first, and even better if the entire chapter is absorbed.
What is the “prize”? Why does Paul seem more concerned about life after death, in heaven? Earlier in this ancient letter, Paul briefly describes his “former life” before meeting Jesus. The short story is when he came to know Jesus personally, Paul’s life flipped 180 degrees. Everything he had accomplished based on his personal goals for achievement was now considered as “worthless” to him when compared “with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8).
Paul doesn’t just hint at what his new goal in life is after meeting Jesus. His language is very clear, powerful, and emphatic. He was willing to lose everything this world has to offer if it meant knowing Jesus more. If he could know Jesus better through hardships, bring them on. History shows that Paul did face many challenges, even facing the loss of his life, because he never took his eyes off Jesus but faithfully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.
Apply - What is the “prize” that motivates you, both now and forever? Knowing Jesus covers both. And there is no better goal to pursue if you desire infinite joy and fulfillment while on this earth.
Pray - Gracious Maker of the heavens and the earth, thank you for speaking through your servant Paul to show us how to keep our eyes on Jesus. I acknowledge you as the prize worthy of my complete devotion. My desire is that you are honored through my life and someday through my death as well.
