DAY 3 OF 17

Day three! Here we go.

Together throughout this series we’re learning to effortlessly do what Jesus would do if he were in our place. We’re practicing being at home with the Father wherever we are. And we’re doing that through spiritual disciplines.

Today, we look at the discipline of silence. To the chagrin of extroverts everywhere, silence is a gift. It allows us the opportunity to listen to God.

Silence also does something else for us: It gives us the time to consider our words fully. It grants us the presence of mind to control what we say and how we say it. If you’re someone who struggles with gossip or lying or sarcasm or self-promotion, silence is gift you can embrace.

And here’s something unexpected: Silence in us actually earns a great trust. Through it, we can begin to let go of what other people are thinking or saying about us and simply put that in God’s hands. It’s the silence that brings freedom. The knowing that God has it under control.

When we are silent, we find the God who speaks to us. And He says, “Welcome Home.”

Today’s invitation:

Today, think of moments of brief silence. Instead of turning on music, just be silent. If you experience anxiety, that’s okay. Invite God into it. If you go outside, invite God in. In everything you do, embrace the quiet and notice His presence.
