Every parent knows how tough it is to persuade kids to think ahead. They watch TV when their homework awaits. They play computer games instead of typing their report. They garbage up on junk food at 4:30 when a great supper is coming at 5:00. The default position of the human brain is to care only about right now. There is no tomorrow.
Adults have the same temptations, though your evasions may have gotten a little more sophisticated. Satan thinks it’s in his interest to keep your head down - to have you care only about your appetites and agenda right now. He uses dozens of addictions to keep us distracted and drugged.
Here’s the truth: the future really does matter. King Jesus is coming back with his holy angels to separate the believers from the unbelievers. Waiting until later to listen to God is flirting with spiritual suicide. Hebrews 12:2 says, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.” If there is anything in your life that is holding you back from following Jesus, get rid of it. Tomorrow is coming soon. Right now is your personal time of grace to welcome God’s good news.
