Worship Forever: A 5-Day Devotional by Michael W. Smith

DAY 1 OF 5

FOREVER

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever.” - Psalm 136:1 (NIV)

Our world is constantly changing. Parents feel it every day. This seamless series of transition. Your baby quickly turns into a toddler and then after what feels like a few summers, you’re helping them move into their dorm room on the other side of the country.

This life is full of starts and stops, beginning and endings, hellos, and goodbyes. Friends move away. Jobs change. We lose loved ones.

The dizzying pace of new technology makes us always feel one step behind. So much of our lives are spent dealing with change that it’s hard to imagine the unchangeable. But when we stop to really ponder who God is, we are reminded of this ancient truth: “His love endures forever.” Forever.

In a world with seemingly no guarantees, God gives us this ultimate assurance. The promise that He is the same “yesterday, today, and forever.”

In these turbulent times, God’s unchanging faithfulness is something we must cling to. He really is in charge. He really is on His throne, and He really will make all things right in the end. Kings and queens pass away. Nations rise and fall. But His goodness and glory are unchangeable. And His love is a forever love.

As one of the greatest hymns ever written says of God:  “Thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not. As thou hast been, thou forever will be."

People may leave or disappoint us. Our possessions may be lost or destroyed, but God is our unfailing assurance. He will never leave or forsake us. And when we put our trust in the work that Christ has done, we know that a million years from now we will still be able to sing: “His love endures forever.”
